Welcome and thanks for checking this website!
I'm Charlotte, I'm French and I lived in Mauritius from 2013 to 2016 for work-related reasons.
I arrived there as a mild animal lover, and I left as a crazy dog lady 😊
I was genuinely appalled by what I witnessed there - the number of stray dogs, the way they were being treated by people, the absurd way the government was handling the situation... It was truly revolting and heart breaking.
I adopted two dogs while I was there: a tiny puppy who had been left on the beach, barely 3-4 weeks old, suffering from mange and covered with fleas... The tiny puppy - Douglas - has grown A LOT and is currently living with me in London. I heard the other dog get hit by a car and picked him up. Alfred was a seasoned stray dog, but quickly put the sofa to good use and was the most loving pooch ever. He sadly passed away in 2018.
Since my departure from Mauritius, I've kept informed about the situation by following different charities, hoping to see things getting better. Sadly, it seems like they are getting worse, and that cats, who back in 2016 were not that numerous, are now being treated the same way.
I decided to create this website and the Instagram account to try and bring some awareness to the problem. I feel like if prospective tourists end up choosing another destination and their concern is heard, then maybe it will lead the Mauritian government to make better choices.
